Granmommie's Garden Project For March

Give your garden some height the easy way. This is a very easy way to give some vertical structure to your garden or patio that will look pretty year-round. They will even look pretty in the dead of winter and even prettier with your favorite plant climbing up or just in a pot below.

This one is made from bamboo stakes. You can get them at your garden center in a bundle to use as tomatoe stakes. All you have to do is tie them together at the top with garden twine or wire. Use any kind of hollow sphere with a hole in one end and stick the ends of the stakes into it to help steady it and decorate the top. Stand it up over a pot or in your flower bed to support tall flowers or vines. The cost is little to nothing if already have the materials in your garage or shed.

This obelisk is beautiful and very simple too. You can paint it any color you like to match your garden or house. Again you can use tomatoe stakes or just buy some 1x1 cedar or pine board in whatever length you want the height to be. Cedar will last alot longer in the ground. I am sure you have an old clay pot you can paint and put on the top after you have tied or wired the stakes together. If not any small pot will work and then you use outdoor glue or liquid nail to hold a painted wooden finial on the top to dress it up! I have found bags of wooden finials and odd pieces of wood in the craft stores to use in the garden.

You can just use your imagination to make all kinds of interesting obelisks for your garden! I have one that I made out of 4-7ft.joints of 3/4 in.cooper pipe I found at a yard sale. I drilled holes in the top and wired it together so the wire wouldn't slip off. I also wired on some cross pieces I had cut out of another joint. At the top I mounted an old blue glass telephone insulator I had collected and couldn't find a use for. It looks beautiful with a pink jasmine climbing through it!

Just get out there and give your garden a little height and beauty whether it is on the patio in a pot or in the garden with your vegetables! Enjoy yourself and have fun in the garden!
