Descendants of Isaac Frazier, Sr.

Generation No. 1

1. ISAAC1 FRAZIER, SR.1,2 was born Bef. 1750 in Virginia3,4, and died Abt. 1801
in Rapides Parish, Louisiana. He married OLIVIA LEE5,6. She was born Abt. 1755
in Virginia7,8, and died Aft. 1830 in Rapides Parish, Louisiana8.

Notes for ISAAC FRAZIER, SR.:
The following was extracted from Carolyn Frazier Cathey's and Margaret Rose
Brunson Hickman's "Frazier File".

Isaac Frazier, Sr., born prior to 1762 (based on land grantage records), died
1801- 1802. He was married to Olivia Lee. Baptism records of a grandson, William
Miller, indicate that Isaac and Olivia were natives of Virginia. Isaac, Olivia
and Olivia's family are found in the Old 96th District, Union County South
Carolina in 1779. Isaac and his brother-in-laws were Loyalists in Major Daniel
Plummer's Regiment, Fair Forrest Militia, Ninety-Six Brigade.

Olivia was born 1750-1760 and died after the 1830 census. The following sketchy
data was obtained from hours of skimming through old, dusty records in the State
Land Office in Baton Rouge and from published information in books.

The first record we have of Isaac Frazier in Louisiana is the census of the
Opelousas Post in 1783: "Isaac Frazier, one male in the middle-age group; four
females; six cattle; one horse; and, no land.

August 10, 1794 - Isaac Frazier was one of many signers of a petition to the
Military Governor of Louisiana to allow them to settle on an area near Catahoula
Lake. This is the area along Bayou Flagon.

In 1799 or 1800, the census taken of the Rapides Post listed: "Isaac Frazer -
Age 25-49; wife - age 25-49; children - 4 boys (1-24 years old); 2 females (1-24
 years old).

Apparently, Isaac Frazier, or the other settlers did not wait for permission to
settle on the land near Catahoula Lake, for we find early Land Records, bulging
with statements that they settled there about 1799.

In 1803, when the United States made the Louisiana Purchase, it became necessary
for the settlers to apply to the Bureau of Land Management to be able to retain
the Spanish Grants. The following are depositions of friends and family members
submitted to support the land claims.

Deposition of Matthew Nugent relative to the claim of the heirs of Isaac Frazier:
This deponent, being first sworn, deposes and says that about seven or eight
years ago, Isaac Frazier, father of the claimants, built a mill and cleared
about one and half or two acres of some land and that about two years after, he
died, and his widow enjoyed the benefit of it until it was destroyed by flood.
Shortly after the death of the said Isaac Frazier, Benjamin Miller, who had been
appointed guardian to the children moved on the land and has continued to live
there ever since. 25th December 1806. Matthew Nugent.

Deposition of Benjamin Miller relative to the claim of the heirs of Isaac
Frazier: The heirs of Isaac Frazier claim six hundred and forty acres of land
lying on the Bayou Fragon (sic), by virtue of a settlement made by the said
Isaac Frazier. The said tract of land was settled eight or nine years ago, and
has been occupied ever since for the benefit of the heirs ever since the death
of their father, which happened about five or six years ago.

Deposition of Robert Sandifer relative to the claim of the heirs of Isaac
Frazier for the Spanish Grant in Rapides Parish on Bayou Flagon. This deponent,
being first sworn, deposeth and saith that the land claimed was settled in the
year 1802 by Benjamin Miller, who has resided on it ever since. The improvements
consist of 15 or 20 acres of cleared land, several cabins and a mill. Signature
 - Robert Sandefur.

Olaviah Frazier claims six hundred and forty acres of land lying on Bayou Flagon
in the county of Rapides - by virtue of settlement made under the second act of
 congress.

Deposition of Benjamin Miller relative to the claim of Olavia Frazier: This
deponent being first sworn deposes and says that the claimant, Olaviah Frazier
(with her husband) settled on the land claimed 8 or 9 years ago, and actually
resided and cultivated a crop on the same in the year 1803, they had an
improvement of 19 or 20 acres of land cleared and a good log house. 25 February
1806 - Benj. Miller.

Deposition of Benjamin Miller relative to the claim of McCuin Barrow: The
deponent being first sworn deposeth and saith that early in the year 1803, the
claimant McCuin Barrow, with his family settled on the land claimed, and cleared
thereon four or five acres which he cultivated in corn. He continued to live on
the said land until some time after Christmas when his wife died and then moved
off the land. The next year he cultivated a small crop on the land and has
since that had a tenant on it. 26th Feb. 1806 - Benj. Miller.

On the basis of the strong supporting testimonies that the heirs of Isaac
Frazier had indeed been on the land, cultivated it, and inhabited it, they, and
their mother (Olivia Frazier), were granted their claims to the Spanish Grants
bu the Bureau of Land Management. In addition, Michael LaCroix and Benjamin
Miller were granted land by the Bureau of Land Management, all along Bayou
Flagon.

The 1810 Rapides census lists: Frazer, Mde. (Madam) 2 males 10-16, 2 males 16-26,
 1 female 45-up.

The 1820 Rapides census (living on Bayou Flagon) lists: Oliviah Frazer, 1 male
16-26, 1 male 45-up, 1 female 10-16, 1 female 16-26, 1 female 45-up.

It appears that there is another family in the home with Olivia, probably a
daughter and a son-in-law with their family.

The 1830 census lists: Olivia Frazer, 1 male 60-70, 1 female 70-80,. This is the
last census in which Olivia has been located.

MARI HOOTER. She was born March 02, 1793, and died 1822. He married (2) MARTHA ?
Aft. 1822. She was born 1801.

Notes for ISAAC FRAZIER, JR.:
Isaac Frazier may have married Martha ?, born 1801. Both Isaac and Martha were
living in 1850, but were not located afterward. They appeared to have moved
along, as the only trace of the family after the 1850 census is the two oldest
sons, James Louis and John Michael Frazier, who had married local girls and
settled down there for the rest of their lives. Isaac and Martha's children in
1850 census are listed below.

married (2) AMAZINE COE Bef. 1850. He married (3) ELIZABETH ANN MCCOLLUM BASS
November 11, 1852 in Catahoula Parish, Louisiana, daughter of THOMAS T. MCCOLLUM.
She was born 1833 in Georgia, and died in Sunflower County, Mississippi.

Notes for JOHN FRAZIER:
Extracted from Carolyn Frazier Cathey and Margaret Rose Brunson Hickman's "
Frazier File".

According to the census records of 1850 and 1860, John Frazer, William Frazier,
David Baggett, the Carraways, and T. J. Casey were all living in a group in a
settlement known as Funny Louie. Funny Louie is a bayou that runs into Little
River about three miles down the river from Zenoria, and goes all the way to
French Fork. Old timers referred to the area around French Fork as Funny Louie.
By 1870, John moved to White Sulphur Springs. He and William both apparently
lived just north of the springs and probably a little west.

The following children are listed in deed books, court records, etc., which give
strong proof of the relationship. There may be other children.

Notes for ELIZABETH ANN MCCOLLUM BASS:
In 1873, three years after John Frazier died, Elizabeth Ann, took the children
from their marriage, Rebecca, Amanda Jane, James Thomas, Seth, George, Rhoda,
Michael and Joseph to Mississippi. They settled near Woodburn Plantation,
Sunflower County, Mississippi, which was about five miles west of Inverness. The
family later moved about twelve miles north and formed Frazier, Mississippi.
Frazier, Mississippi was located about six miles southeast of Shaw, Mississippi.
A Post Office was established in 1907, with James Thomas Frazier as Postmaster.

WHATLEY. She was born Abt. 1816, and died Aft. 1880.

Notes for JAMES LOUIS FRAZIER:
Both James Louis and Elizabeth Frazier were living in the 1880 census. It is not
known when they died or where they are buried. In James' signature, the middle
initial is very difficult to read. This has led to speculation as to what the
middle name is. It has been interpreted as "I" for Isaac, "L" for Louis, and in
the voter rolls for 1872, when typed, the name was interpreted as James Davis
Frazier. Davis and Louis when written could be mistaken for each other. The
Clerk of Court had difficulty with the middle initial also, but most of the time,
 it is shown as "L".

Children of JAMES FRAZIER and ELIZABETH WHATLEY are:
  i. MARY JANE4 FRAZIER80, b. Abt. 1838.
  Notes for MARY JANE FRAZIER:
Mary Jane Frazier was shown at home in the 1860 census, but not located in the
1870 census and assumed that she was married. No marriage license has been
located, but it could have been in Rapides where the records were destroyed in
1864.

45. ii. ELIZABETH A. FRAZIER, b. Abt. 1840.
46. iii. LUCY EMELINE FRAZIER, b. December 20, 1842; d. July 21, 1914.
