Chub Barton

was born in Clinton CO., IA 2 August 1855. Jonathan died 21 February 1938 in Pipestone, MN, at 82 years of age.
(1360) His body was interred 24 February 1938 in Lake View, IA.
He married Mary Agnes Gaddis 23 October 1879 in Mequoketa, IA. (1361) Mary was born 18 January 1861 in Mequoketa, IA.
Mary was the daughter of Robert Gaddis and Deborah Demming. Mary died 19 January 1928 in Lake View, IA, at 67 years of age.
The year following their marriage Jonathan and Mary Agnes rented some land and began farming on their own.
In 1891 the couple and six children moved to Rock County Minnesota where they farmed for several years.
In 1895 the moved again, this time to Lake View IA where Jonathan, then known as Chub, became a butter maker and then the owner of a dray line meeting the trains and hauling freight to stores and businesses in town.
The family moved again in 1907, to Pipestone County Minnesota where daughter Zaida and her husband lived.
Chub rented some land in Altona and resumed farming for the next nine years.
In 1919 they moved to Trosky, MN where Jonathan operated a cream station and managed the hotel.
They returned to Lake View where Mary died 19 January 1928. That same year Jonathan suffered a stroke, which left him an invalid for his remaining years. (K Smith 1999)
According to information provided by a descendant, Jonathan was blind late in his lifetime.

This is the Obituary of RAY MERRICK W. ALLEN Funeral services for Ray Merrick Willard Allen were conducted Thursday afternoon from the Methodist church in Marshall. Dr. Andrew A.Stave officiated at the last rites. Soloist for the services was Mrs. Donald Hess, accompanied by Mrs. Wesley Kugler. Casket bearers were his six sons, Eugene, Ralph, John, Donald, Franklin and Marvin. Burial was in the Marshall cemetery. The Throop mortuary was in charge. Ray Merrick Willard was one of six children born to Franklin and Lydia Parsons Allen. He was born May 7, 1889, in Lincoln county near Verdi, Minn. He died in the afternoon of July 23, 1956, at the Weiner Memorial Hospital in Marshall where he had been a patient for but a short time. Ray moved with his family from the farm where he was born, when he was about five years old, to the home near Pipestone. In that community he was baptized and later confirmed in the Methodist church and received his formal schooling. As a young man Ray met Edna Mae Barton to whom he was married on March 6,1912. To this union nine children were born, all of whom survive. Mr. and Mrs. Allen began their married life on the home farm and lived there for about nine years except for one winter That they lived in Pipestone. Upon leaving the farm, the Allen's moved to Brookings, S.D. where Ray was employed by the Chicago and Northwestern railroad. They lived and worked in Brookings until about fifteen years ago when Ray's health began to fail and the family moved into the Marshall community. Aside from his membership in the Methodist church, Ray was at one time a member of the Modern Woodmen of America.Ray Allen is survived by his wife, Edna, of Ghent, his daughters, Mrs. Mary Larson of Brookings, Mrs. Irma Powley of Pine City, Mrs. Ardath Cantrell of Benton,Ar and sons, Eugene of Russell, Ralph, John, Donald and Franklin, all of Marshall, and Marvin of Arco. He has one surviving sister, Mrs. Lena Reynolds of Arco, and brothers, Otis of Pipestone and Fred of Auburn, Wash. Also surviving are 30 grandchildren.
