The Mother of Arlecia, Roy, and Clark Houston

Sarah Caroline Bray was the mother of Clark, Roy, and Arlecia Houston. She married Samuel Dallas Houston in DeRoche Arkansas. Sam Houston was ordained to preach for the DeRoche Baptist Church. Hickory Grove Baptist Church was organized on 31 Aug 1873. Sam Houston was one of the early Pastors of the Church. S. D. Houston was also a pastor of the Midway Missionary Baptist Church. After Sam died Sarah Caroline would cook meals for the Hot Springs County jail where her brother Daniel Stokes Bray was the Sheriff from 1918 to 1922. This jail was located at Malvern.

About the Family Roots

The Cantrell side of the family traces back to the 1500's in England and Wales. They came to Delaware around 1690. They migrated down to South Carolina and on to Georgia where John and Martha Cantrell are buried. Several of their sons including our Great Great Grandfather Phillip Cantrell lived there until shortly after the Civil War at which time they moved west to Missouri and Kansas. Phillip served in the Civil War as a Confederate in Capt. Russell's Company, Georgia Cavalry as a Private. Phillip and his son Silas lived in Franklin County Kansas from the early 1870's until Silas left Kansas in 1883 to return to Georgia shortly after his marriage and divorce to Lizzie James. They had a son named John Phillip Cantrell who was raised by his grandparents Phillip and Elizabeth Cantrell. It is said that Silas married again and had more children before moving back to the Cherokee Nation around 1900.

Phillip was also a member of the Pomona Masonic Lodge #138 from 1873 when it was first chartered until 1901 when he moved to Missouri.

The family stayed in Pomona Kansas until about 1901. For some unknown reason they left or lost their 200 acre farm in Kansas and moved to El Dorado Springs, MO. where Phillip, Elizabeth and John lived until about 1912 at which time they moved to the Hot Springs County Arkansas area where John married.

Arlecia Houston married John Phillip Cantrell in 1914 shortly before the death of John's grandfather Phillip on Feb. 6, 1915. Phillip Cantrell was 92 years old at the time of his death. Elizabeth lived with John and Arlecia until 1924, when she died in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. The young John P. Cantrell must have been a traveling man. Since their first child Helen was born in Pine Bluff, AR., the second child John P. Jr. was born in Texarkana, TX., and the third child Raymond Howard was born in Ocean Springs, MS. Not long after Elizabeth's death in Mississippi, the family returned to Hot Springs County, AR. Below is a picture of John P. Cantrell on the band stand in Ocean Springs, Mississippi holding a mandolin and his daughter Helen about age 5 standing at his side.
